Who is eligible to go on this trip?
Aurora High School Seniors and Juniors. This is explained in more detail on the Travel Info page of this website.
How much walking will I have to do?
Although Washington, DC has a great subway system and we will using the Metro to get around the city, it is also a great walking city. Walking allows you to see the sites and is a terrific way to experience the city. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes because you can expect to walk an average of 8-10 miles per day.
How much should I pack?
We recommend packing a carry-on bag or smaller for several reasons.
- The cost of the trip does not include checked bag fees.
- Our time is limited in DC so the quicker we can get out of the airport and on our way to see the sites the happier we are. We don't want to wait at the baggage claim carrousel.
- We leave the hotel early in the morning and return around 10 pm. Since we are rarely in our hotel rooms during the day, there is no time for changing clothes, so pack light.
- Big bags are cumbersome on public transportation and escalators.
Are there Fundraising Opportunities to help pay for this trip?
Yes. We have a few dates during the volleyball and basketball seasons to run the concession stand. We are planning at least one other fundraiser that is not a concession stand. We are also open to suggestions for new fundraising ideas.
How Much Spending Money Should I Bring?
Entrance fees, metro passes, supper Monday night, supper Tuesday night, and breakfast Wednesday morning are included in the cost of the trip. Participants will be responsible for paying for lunches on Monday and Wednesday, breakfast Tuesday morning, snacks, rides or movies at the Smithsonian Museum, and souvenirs. $30 or more per day is suggested.
What hotel are we staying at?
We try to reserve rooms at the Harrington Hotel. This is a "travelers" hotel in a safe area close to most of our activities and Metro Center. Most students get to choose their roommates at the discretion of the Trip Sponsors. Ultimate approval of all roommate selections rests with the Trip Sponsors and as many as 4-6 students will share a room.
